The scary thing about using a very specific art movement as your inspiration is the fear that it might not work and you end up with images that do not capture the essence and feel of your chosen subject. With this project, life was made much more simple by our beautiful model Grace who is a real fan and aficionado of this art movement and guided us throughout.
Our location was the grounds of Newstead Abbey in its full Autumnal glory. The vibrant colours were tempered by the grey, overcast conditions and this really suited this beautiful yet melancholy theme. We used natural light for the vast majority of the time with some of the attendees trying out their speedlites towards the end when it was getting rather dark. The post-production was also varied and on the whole I think everyone was successful in their own way.
The resultant photography as you can see is spectacular and I think you can instantly see the connection to the Pre-Raphaelite paintings. At the same time, some of the photographers present chose to interpret the theme in a more modernistic way which also produced some stunning contemporary looking photography.
All in all one of the best workshops we’ve ever put on with our souls heartily fed on art, culture and of course photography.
